Motorcycle Riding Tip - How to Survive Hitting a Deer at High Speed

Like the old saying goes, “The Lord looks after fools and drunks.”

Judging by the video on the above right, this guy was not drunk, but he seems to be a bit of a fool. He was doing speeds of 80+ mph, on a rainy day, down a heavily wooded road which offered nearly zero visibility of oncoming dangers -- like a deer, perhaps?

His poor decisions aside, he really is a good rider. Notice the speed at impact -- 72 mph... And he DIDN’T dump his motorcycle! Just a little wobble & back under control. Now HOW did he do that?

Sure, luck played a part, it was a glancing blow, rather than a mid-deer strike. But a less experienced rider still would have been toast. When you watch the vid, there are a few lessons we can learn:

1) Obviously, ride defensively, and minimize the danger to yourself in the first place. Speed lowers your reaction time, and rain makes for slick road surfaces (especially a light rain such as that in the video -- where all it does is make oil residue rise & other dirt to the road surface, as opposed to a hard rain that actually washes some of that gunk off the road), and heavily wooded roads dramatically decrease your visibility (you won’t be able to see a deer until it suddenly leaps out in front of you, and the deer won’t see YOU until then either).

1) However, one just can’t be 100% safe while riding. The very act of riding a motorcycle is to put yourself into danger (sometimes more than others). Nothing could have stopped that deer from jumping out into the road, after all. So if you simply can not avoid a road hazard, and you know an impact is coming -- whether it’s from a furry woodland creature, or some road debris -- Keep the wheel straight. Keep your head. Don’t even bother looking around until you’ve come to a safe stop at the side of the road.

1) Inertia can be your friend, or your foe. Do not turn the wheel at the time of impact. That will guarantee that you’ll not be able to maintain control. However, with inertia on your side, you may be able to brace yourself and power through the hit, as this rider did.

1) For God’s sake, do NOT lock your brakes. This could send you fishtailing into the impact -- which could mean that you hit the deer (or whatever) sideways... NOT good. You and your bike WILL become airborne. And after the impact, if you lock it, you could lose control and do more damage to you and your bike than the impact itself did.

I used to work at a bike shop back in semi-rural Pennsylvania, and I’ve seen some really messed up bikes (& bikers) after a deer vs. motorcycle crash.

He is one LUCKY guy... But also, he did the right things in a bad situation.

Be careful riding out there. The deer get restless this time of year.

It felt like it had been forever....

Anyway, that taste of good riding weather was just what the doctor ordered!

So enjoy the new biker chicks!

A huge thank you to ridehardliveloud.com for the awesome babe pics, and a shoutout to Sean for the pics of his current ride!

Hope this year brings many more miles of riding!

Funny how it’s tough to imagine being back in the saddle with all this snow... First the East Coast got buried, now out west (where I live in Colorado just had a nice blizzard just the other day too).

But all things to change...and in a few more months, the sun will start feeling stronger once again & the days will lengthen & all of the snow and below-zero wind chills will be a memory.

Then I’m looking forward to pulling the Harley out of storage & hitting those mountain twisty roads once again!

So once again -- Happy New Year and thanks for visiting TheBikerWeb.com!

By the way, I’ve just posted some new hot pics of bikes & babes -- check out the Biker Babes Galore, the Hot Babes and the Bikers and Bikes photo galleries to check ‘em all out.

It was a very close call. But it’s been announced that Harley Davidson will in fact NOT be leaving Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

This is good news for a number of reasons -- but also for Harley purists & Harley Davidson itself. Really, so much of the loyalty that Harley has always enjoyed from its customers is traceable to its history. From its founding over 100 yrs ago, to being the last major “American” motorcycle manufacturer today.

Losing Harley would have been a massive blow to Milwaukee too...at a time when it could least afford to lose the jobs.

This is good news, because it means Harley will remain an “American” motorcycle for at least a little while longer.

Like I was saying before, once the ties to Milwaukee are broken, it’ll be that much easier for them to totally ship their production jobs abroad -- it really is that slippery of a slope... and this was that close of a call.

Maybe you have heard by now that Harley Davidson is considering leaving Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Harley has been having some very difficult times these past few years. I’ve posted before about Harley’s problems -- an aging customer base in the US, compounded by the fact that they’re selling $10k+ bikes during “Great Depression 2.0” (B.S. that this is just a recession...with the real unemployment rate around 20% and with no end in sight). About 2 years ago, I was already wondering how long Harley will even be an “American” motorcycle.

Moving out of Milwaukee will be the first step to moving abroad. Once they cut those historical ties, there’s nothing holding them back from shipping jobs to Mexico or China or wherever the cost of labor is cheapest.

Now, even the CEO of Intel is telling America’s business leaders that outsourcing every job possible is actually destroying this country’s future. And it doesn’t take a genius to put 2+2 together on that -- really, if all we have left are minimum wage service jobs...then at the very least, you’ve managed to destroy your tax base. Not a good idea when we’re looking at trillions of dollars in national debt...

Check it out: How to Make an American Job

Anyway... here’s the heart-breaking news from Harley Davidson about the likelihood of their leaving Wisconsin in an effort to save their business (it is true that they’ve been losing some serious cash as the people who typically buy their bikes have been losing their jobs & homes the past few years).
Nothing like a good old fashioned biker B-movie from the late ‘60s! Check out this original movie trailer for Hells Angels on Wheels, from 1967.

Interesting how, more than 40 years later, this still shapes the world’s view of the biker lifestyle. Though the times, they are a changin’ -- with the rise of the Biker Build-Off shows, and American Chopper, and a whole host of other mass-market cable TV programs... For good or ill the general public’s attitude toward & understanding of “bikers” is changing.
