There has been some interesting speculation going on about a possible merger in the works between Harley and Ducati, and I’ve come across recent reports from the likes of Forbes Magazine that Honda is in talks to buy out HD.
Some have been gasping in horror -- “There goes the last major ‘American’ motorcycle manufacturer!” Others have been somewhat more positive, openly wondering what cool mechanical innovations a Harley/Ducati company could lead to.
(What would that odd beast be called? Duc-avidson? Harl-ati? Any other ideas?)
Harley has a record of working with outside engineers on major projects too. After all, let’s not forget that the new “Revolution” engine was the result of Porsche/Harley R&D. So maybe the powers that be in Milwaukee are actually quite comfortable with the idea of working out a partnership with another established motorcycle manufacturer.
Whether or not the rest of the world is ready for it, is yet to be seen...
